Yeah, it's supposed to be rest and recuperation time. But that doesn't mean I have to stop taking photos, does it?
As some of you know, I had a little hospital drama over the last few days. I’m not even a fan of the ones on tv, so this wasn’t an ideal scenario. But disaster has been averted thanks to some very cool people at Milton Keynes General Hospital, and the attentions of my soul brother Steve. And since Steve is around, and MK is where I am, that’s what I’ve been taking pictures of. That’s his nibs at the top there, looking all moody by a small lake we took a stroll round.
I’ve always thought Steve’s got an interesting face (and I don’t mean in the perjorative sense!) - I’m probably biased by knowing what a superb human-being he is. But I think these things always come through in portraits, so one day soon I’m going to get a stylist and some groovy clothes up here and do an MK fashion shoot with him. Whether he wants to or not!
These other shots are a bit of a bittersweet story. A little while ago I lamented the lack of a particular sort of film I wanted for one of the shoots on the Wrong Mr Johnson movie. The special one that was perfectly balanced for cross processing - remember? I said I was going to buy a case-load when I got to the UK .
Well, I tried. And here’s the flip-side of the digital revolution: the company that made that film have gone bust. Inevitable that some should go, I suppose. But this was Agfa! One of the Big 3. A huge amount of the ‘own-brand’ film throughout Europe was actually made by Agfa, so that’s gone too... And it really does appear that didge killed it. Agfa itself was making nigh on 4 billion Euros a year when there was a buyout of the film division, presumably to save it from the axe. It was dead within a year.
I did find a guy who had seen some bankrupt stock of this one kind of film, and bought it all up, and in turn, I bought as much of his stock as I could afford. And when that’s gone.... well, I guess that will be the end of this effect. When I think of Lomo and The Face and iD Magazine... maybe it will be seen as the last style movement of the film age.
